Gandhi Museum in Madurai Renovated at Rs 10.25 Crore: Chief Minister Vijay Inaugurates Upgraded Facility

The Gandhi Memorial Museum in Madurai has been renovated at a cost of Rs 10.25 crore and reopened with modern visitor facilities. Chief Minister Vijay inaugurated the renovated museum during his visit to Madurai.

The upgraded museum now features audio-visual displays, AV theatres, digital screens and improved exhibition facilities, offering visitors a modern experience while showcasing the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

Chief Minister Vijay Inaugurates Renovated Gandhi Museum

Chief Minister Vijay visited the Gandhi Memorial Museum and paid floral tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi statue. He subsequently inaugurated the renovated museum and inspected the galleries displaying items associated with Gandhi.

A documentary titled “Madurai and Gandhi” was also screened at the museum.

Modern Facilities Added

The Rs 10.25-crore renovation has introduced several modern facilities, including:

- Audio-visual presentation areas

- AV theatres for documentary screenings

- Digital display screens

- Upgraded exhibition spaces

- Improved visitor facilities

The new facilities are aimed at helping visitors learn more about Mahatma Gandhi`s life, his visits to Tamil Nadu and India`s freedom movement.

Madurai`s Connection with Mahatma Gandhi

Madurai has an important place in Gandhi`s history. During his visit to the city in 1921, Gandhi adopted a simpler style of dress, which became an important part of his public image.

His visit to Madurai in 1934 was also associated with the social reform and temple-entry movement in the region.

History of Gandhi Memorial Museum

The Gandhi Memorial Museum is located on a 13-acre historic campus in Madurai. The site was originally associated with the summer palace built by Queen Mangammal in 1670. During British rule, the premises were later used as residences for district collectors and judges.

The Tamil Nadu government handed over the property to the All India Gandhi Memorial Fund in 1955. The Gandhi Memorial Museum was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on April 14, 1959.

The renovated museum is expected to strengthen Madurai`s heritage tourism appeal while preserving important memories and historical materials connected with Mahatma Gandhi.
