Chennai Corporation Removes 40 Tonnes of Old Sofas and Mattresses From Homes

The Greater Chennai Corporation has removed nearly 40 tonnes of old sofas, mattresses and other solid waste directly from residents’ homes based on requests received from the public.

According to a Chennai Corporation press release, the civic body has been carrying out the doorstep collection and disposal of old sofas, mattresses, furniture and clothes every Saturday since October 11. Residents are required to register in advance to use the service.

39.93 Tonnes of Old Items Collected

Based on requests received from 83 residents, the Chennai Corporation collected 39.93 metric tonnes of old items in a single day.

The collected waste was transported using 36 vehicles to the incineration facility at Kodungaiyur, where it was disposed of using scientific methods.

Following registration, Chennai Corporation workers will visit the residents’ homes every Saturday and collect old sofas, mattresses, furniture, clothes and other eligible solid waste for safe disposal.

The civic body has appealed to residents to make use of the Chennai Corporation doorstep waste collection service and help ensure proper disposal of bulky household waste.
