Following the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections held across all 234 constituencies on the 23rd, a large number of Chennai residents who had traveled to their hometowns to cast their votes began returning to the city yesterday.

As government and private offices resumed operations today, thousands of vehicles-including two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, vans, cars, government buses, and private omni-buses - headed back toward Chennai from the southern districts, leading to heavy traffic congestion.

The situation was particularly severe on GST Road near Singaperumal Koil in Chengalpattu district, along the Trichy -Chennai National Highway, where traffic remained gridlocked for over an hour.

Tambaram City Police and Traffic Police personnel were deployed to regulate the flow of vehicles and ease congestion. To manage the situation, heavy vehicles were diverted via Oragadam and Sriperumbudur routes.
