CMRL Clears Flyover Construction Above Teynampet, Nandanam Metro Stations

Chennai: Construction of the 3.2 km Teynampet - Saidapet elevated corridor is set to resume above the Teynampet and Nandanam Metro stations after Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) granted permission to the State Highways Department to proceed with the work.

The project, being built along Anna Salai, had been stalled for several months due to design-related concerns over construction above the operational Metro stations.

A Japanese consultant appointed by CMRL reviewed the design and recommended installing portal frames along a 300-metre stretch above the two stations at 15-metre intervals. CMRL has now approved the revised construction plan.

Around 2.3 km of the corridor has already been completed, with 50 of the planned 69 piers erected. Of the total 3.2-km stretch, about 2.4 km runs directly above the Metro tunnel, including a 460-metre section over the Teynampet and Nandanam stations.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2027. Officials said the portal-frame installation alone could take three to four months.

The ₹621-crore project is considered a major engineering challenge as it is being constructed directly above an operational underground Metro tunnel. The tunnel runs around 14–15 metres below Anna Salai, while the flyover foundations have been drilled only up to about seven metres to avoid affecting the Metro infrastructure.
