Tamil Nadu CMO May Shift to NKM Before Pongal: 10th Floor Preparations Underway

The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) is likely to be shifted from Fort St George to Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai (NKM) during the Tamil month of Thai, ahead of the Pongal festival.

Preparatory works are currently underway on the 10th floor of the NKM building, where the new CMO is being planned. The floor has been divided into three blocks for the proposed office.

50% of NKM 10th Floor Offices Already Shifted

Two major works are being carried out as part of the preparations. A new high-capacity lift has been installed exclusively for the 10th floor. At the same time, offices currently operating on the floor are being shifted to other locations within the NKM building.

According to officials, around 50% of the offices on the 10th floor have already been relocated.

The CMO is planning to move to the new premises during the Pongal festival period, subject to completion of the ongoing works.

₹5.54 Crore Interior Works Planned

The Public Works Department (PWD) has floated three separate tenders for interior works in Blocks 1, 2 and 3 on the 10th floor. The combined estimated cost of the works was ₹5.54 crore.

Raasi Builders emerged as the lowest bidder for all three blocks. The company quoted:

Block 1: ₹1.66 crore against an estimated ₹2.41 crore

Block 2: ₹1.37 crore against an estimated ₹2.01 crore

Block 3: ₹74.94 lakh against an estimated ₹1.12 crore

The three works are expected to be executed for a combined ₹3.78 crore, around 32% below the estimated cost.

New CMO Planned with Modern Facilities

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to shift the Chief Minister’s Office from Fort St George to the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai within the Secretariat complex.

The relocation is planned to address space constraints at the existing CMO and provide improved infrastructure for administrative activities.

The PWD has prepared plans for a dedicated Chief Minister’s office, a modern conference hall and other administrative and interior facilities at the new premises.

If the ongoing preparations are completed as planned, the new Tamil Nadu CMO could begin functioning from NKM around the Pongal period.
