Low Pressure Intensifies into Depression: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Forecast for Tamil Nadu Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that the low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, increasing the likelihood of rainfall across several parts of Tamil Nadu.

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, a trough extends from South Gujarat to Kerala. The deep low-pressure area that persisted over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coast has strengthened into a depression.

The weather system is expected to move west-northwestwards over the next 24 hours and is likely to cross the north Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha near Balasore. It is then expected to continue moving towards north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh.

The weather department has forecast moderate rain accompanied by strong winds of 40–50 km/h at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow.

For the rest of Tamil Nadu, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal, light to moderate rainfall with gusty winds reaching 40–50 km/h is also likely at isolated places.

On July 8, isolated moderate rainfall is expected to continue over the Western Ghats districts.

Residents in areas likely to receive heavy rain and strong winds are advised to remain alert and follow weather updates issued by the meteorological department.
