Anna Salai Flyover in Chennai Expected to Open by September 2026

The massive elevated flyover being constructed on Anna Salai from Saidapet to Teynampet is expected to open for public use by September 2026, according to officials.

The 3.2-km-long steel flyover project, aimed at reducing traffic congestion in central Chennai, has now reached its final phase, with nearly 68% of the construction work completed.

Officials said foundation work is almost complete, while 32 deck slabs have already been installed out of the planned 131 decks. More deck installations are expected to be completed by the end of May.

One of the biggest highlights of the project is that the flyover is being constructed directly above the twin metro tunnels of Chennai Metro Rail Limited, making it one of India’s most challenging engineering projects.

Most of the precast concrete structures are being manufactured outside Chennai in Maharashtra, Goa, and Hyderabad before being assembled on-site. Despite delays caused by labour shortages and rising fuel prices, officials say work has now picked up pace.

Once completed, the Anna Salai flyover is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve travel time between Saidapet and Teynampet.
