WhatsApp Tests a New Green Circle Indicator for Android Users

WhatsApp is testing a refreshed navigation design for Android, replacing its familiar pill-shaped tab highlight with a small green circle behind the selected icon. The change has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.41.7 and is part of a broader effort to modernise the app’s bottom navigation bar.

The redesigned interface is intended to make navigation cleaner and help users identify the section they are viewing at a glance.

A Simpler Look for WhatsApp’s Navigation Bar

In the current design, WhatsApp uses a pill-shaped highlight to indicate the active tab. The new approach uses a compact green circle behind the selected icon, creating a more subtle visual cue while taking up less space.

WhatsApp has also been exploring a floating navigation bar with rounded corners, positioned slightly above the bottom edge of the screen rather than stretching across the entire width.

Icons May Replace Text Labels

Earlier versions of the experimental design showed a navigation bar with icons but no text labels for Chats, Updates, Communities and Calls. The new circular indicator could make this layout easier to use by clearly distinguishing the active section.

The updated interface also shares some visual similarities with WhatsApp’s navigation design on iOS. WhatsApp is reportedly testing the new look in both light and dark modes.

For now, the changes are limited to the app’s appearance. They do not introduce any new messaging or communication features.

When Will the Update Reach Android Users?

WhatsApp has not announced when the redesigned navigation bar will be released. The company routinely tests interface changes before deciding whether to roll them out more widely, so the final design may differ from what is currently being tested.

The circular indicator is still under development and is not yet available to regular users or beta testers.

Android users should continue to download WhatsApp updates through official channels, such as the Google Play Store, and avoid unofficial apps that promise early access to unreleased features.

Until WhatsApp makes an official announcement, the timing of the new navigation design remains uncertain.
