Chennai Traffic Alert: Heavy Congestion on GST Road as Holiday Travellers Return

Heavy traffic congestion was reported on the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road on Wednesday morning as thousands of people returned to Chennai after the four-day holiday period for the weekend, Saraswathi Pooja and Vijayadashami.

The large number of vehicles entering the city at the same time caused traffic to slow considerably, particularly around Vandalur, where vehicles were reportedly moving slowly for nearly 2 km.

Vandalur Sees Heavy Traffic Congestion

The return of holiday travellers led to a significant increase in traffic towards Chennai. According to reports, a high number of private cars and omni buses contributed to the congestion on GST Road.

Traffic jams are common during the beginning and end of long holiday periods, when large numbers of people travel out of Chennai and return at around the same time.

Private Cars Add to Traffic Pressure

The report highlights the growing use of private cars as one factor contributing to urban traffic congestion. When people travel individually or in small groups using separate cars, they occupy more road space than passengers travelling together on buses.

Public transport can carry more passengers using fewer vehicles, potentially reducing the number of vehicles on busy roads.

More Buses and Trains Suggested for Holiday Travel

Transport planning and public transport availability have been highlighted as important factors in managing festive-season traffic.

Suggestions include increasing bus services, improving bus connectivity across different areas and operating additional trains during major holidays. These measures could encourage more people to use public transport and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

The report also notes that building new roads and flyovers alone may not fully resolve traffic congestion without improvements to public transport services.

Motorists travelling towards Chennai are advised to allow extra time for their journeys and check current traffic updates before setting out.
