Greater Chennai Corporation Reviews School Dropout Prevention Measures Across Chennai

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on July 24 held a high-level review meeting to strengthen efforts aimed at preventing school dropouts and bringing out-of-school children back into the education system. The meeting was chaired by GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran and attended by government officials, volunteers, and representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The meeting focused on identifying vulnerable children at an early stage and improving coordination among various government departments to ensure timely educational support and child protection.

Key discussions included safeguarding children without parental care, expanding rehabilitation and counselling services, deploying psychologists in schools located in resettlement colonies, and training teachers to identify and address students` physical and mental health needs.

Officials also stressed the importance of preventing drug abuse near schools and organising special camps to help children obtain essential documents such as Aadhaar cards, birth certificates, and other records required for school admissions.

Improving access to safe drinking water in schools and creating a shared data system to identify children at risk of dropping out before they leave school were also among the major topics discussed.

Commissioner G.S. Sameeran directed all departments to work closely together to ensure that vulnerable children receive timely educational assistance, protection, counselling, and rehabilitation, helping them remain in school and continue their education.
