The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu is set to expand its cabinet today (May 21), with a total of 23 legislators taking oath as ministers. The expansion includes 21 MLAs from TVK and 2 MLAs from the Congress party.

TVK formed the government after emerging as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by winning 108 seats. However, since the party did not secure an absolute majority on its own, it formed the government with the support of Congress, VCK, Left parties and IUML.

TVK leader Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on May 10 along with nine ministers. Portfolios were allocated soon after, but the cabinet expansion had been pending until the official announcement earlier this week.

Congress Returns to Tamil Nadu Cabinet After 59 Years

As part of the alliance arrangement, Congress MLAs Advocate Rajesh Kumar and P. Viswanathan have been inducted into the cabinet. This marks the return of Congress representatives to the Tamil Nadu cabinet after nearly 59 years.
