Chennai Weather Update: Heavy Rain Alert Issued as IMD Forecasts Rainfall Across 26 Districts

Chennai is likely to experience a return of heavy monsoon rainfall from Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for heavy rain across the city and neighbouring districts over the next four days. Rainfall of 6–12 cm within 24 hours is expected in areas covered by the warning.

The city is expected to see sunshine and cloudy skies at intervals during the day, followed by light rain in some areas on Thursday night. However, weather conditions are likely to change from Friday, bringing moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms and lightning to Chennai and its surrounding regions.

Chennai Weather Forecast: Heavy Rain Likely from Friday

According to the IMD forecast, Chennai could receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Friday as the northeast monsoon activity strengthens across Tamil Nadu. The agency has warned of heavy rain in 26 districts, including Chennai and Tiruvallur.

Between October 24 and October 26, the weather warning will also cover Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram, along with several delta and interior districts of Tamil Nadu.

Residents should remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of intense rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning.

Yellow Alert for Heavy Rainfall in Chennai and Neighbouring Districts

The IMD has issued a yellow alert, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall measuring between 6 cm and 12 cm within 24 hours in Chennai and neighbouring districts over the next four days.

The rainfall forecast comes amid an active weather system over southern India. The developing conditions are expected to sustain showers across several parts of Tamil Nadu, with rainfall intensity varying between districts.

The warning highlights the likelihood of continued monsoon activity and the possibility of heavy spells in areas covered by the alert.

Low-Pressure Area and Cyclonic Circulation Behind the Rain

The expected rainfall is associated with a low-pressure area that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal before moving towards the Comorin region and adjoining parts of southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The system`s associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. This circulation helps lift moisture-laden air into higher atmospheric levels, where it cools and condenses, forming rain-bearing clouds.

The low-pressure system and the resulting atmospheric instability are expected to support rainfall across several parts of the state.

An IMD official said the system may move northwards, bringing rain to Chennai and surrounding areas.

Chennai Temperature Forecast: Cloudy Skies to Keep Heat in Check

Persistent cloud cover is likely to keep temperatures relatively moderate in Chennai despite changes in rainfall intensity.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature is expected to remain between 31°C and 32°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to range from 25°C to 26°C.

The combination of cloudy skies, moisture-laden winds and the developing weather system could result in changing conditions throughout the day.

What Chennai Residents Can Expect

With moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning forecast from Friday, residents should monitor official weather updates and plan outdoor activities accordingly. Heavy showers may also affect travel and everyday activities in Chennai and neighbouring districts.

The IMD`s forecast indicates that the next few days could bring widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with Chennai among the districts expected to experience renewed monsoon activity.

Residents are advised to follow official IMD bulletins for the latest district-wise warnings and rainfall updates.
