Chennai to See Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms from August 17

Chennai is likely to experience moderate rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning from Monday, August 17, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC). Weather conditions are expected to intensify later in the week, with heavy rainfall predicted in Chennai and neighbouring districts on Wednesday, August 19.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Chennai and Nearby Districts

The RMC has forecast heavy rain in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur and Villupuram, while parts of the Nilgiris in the Western Ghats region may also receive heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

The weather department has advised residents to remain alert as thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusty winds are likely in several parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Low-Pressure Area Over Bay of Bengal

According to VR Durai, head of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre at RMC, a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near Odisha and Jharkhand, is influencing the weather pattern.

A weak trough extending along and off the Tamil Nadu coast is also continuing in the lower tropospheric levels. These prevailing weather systems are expected to increase rainfall activity across several districts.

Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds in Tamil Nadu

On Monday, moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is likely in isolated areas of the Western Ghats districts, Sivagangai, Madurai and Ramanathapuram.

Similar weather conditions, including strong winds, are expected across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry through Thursday, August 20.

The RMC has also forecast light rain with thunderstorms and lightning in isolated parts of the remaining areas of Tamil Nadu through Tuesday, August 18.

Chennai Weather Forecast

Despite the expected rainfall, temperatures in Chennai are likely to remain relatively high. The maximum temperature on Monday is expected to be around 37°C, while the minimum temperature may remain near 27°C.

Meanwhile, north interior Tamil Nadu is likely to experience maximum temperatures above normal.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official weather alerts, especially during thunderstorms and lightning. People should also take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rain and strong winds.

Chennai Rain Alert: What to Expect

With changing weather conditions across the state, Chennai and nearby districts could see increased rainfall activity during the coming days. The combination of the low-pressure system and the trough near the Tamil Nadu coast is expected to support rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Residents planning outdoor activities or travel should monitor the latest weather updates from the Regional Meteorological Centre.
