Tamil Nadu Philately Passport to Revive Stamp Collecting and Promote Heritage Tourism

Stamp collecting, once a favourite hobby among schoolchildren, is getting a fresh opportunity to regain popularity in Tamil Nadu. India Post has launched a special initiative called the Philately Passport, combining the traditional hobby of collecting stamps with heritage exploration and tourism.

The Tamil Nadu Postal Circle launched this initiative on October 28, 2026, making Tamil Nadu the second state in India to introduce the scheme after Karnataka.

The Philately Passport is designed to motivate people to visit important historical, cultural and tourist destinations across Tamil Nadu. The state currently has 58 Permanent Pictorial Cancellations (PPCs), each featuring a distinctive postal design associated with a particular location.

Visitors can collect these special postal impressions from designated post offices and preserve them in their Philately Passports. The ultimate objective for enthusiasts is to visit all 58 locations and complete their collection.

The initiative is particularly interesting for children and young people, as it brings back the excitement of stamp collecting in a modern and interactive way. Instead of collecting stamps through exchanges or purchases alone, participants can travel to different destinations and obtain special postal cancellations as travel souvenirs.

The Philately Passport was introduced at Philatelic Bureaus in Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy and Puducherry. The encouraging response from collectors on the launch day highlighted the interest in this combination of philately and tourism.

Beyond reviving an old hobby, the initiative can help families discover Tamil Nadu`s rich cultural identity, historical monuments, temples and lesser-known destinations.

In an age when digital photographs have become the usual way of preserving travel memories, collecting unique postal cancellations offers a different and meaningful experience.

The Philately Passport is therefore more than a stamp-collecting booklet. It is an opportunity to learn about Tamil Nadu`s heritage while creating a personal record of travel experiences.
