Chennai Metro Phase-2 Achieves Major Milestones on OMR Corridor-3

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has achieved two significant construction milestones on Corridor-3 (Madhavaram–SIPCOT) under the Phase-2 Metro Rail Project. Under Contract Package C3/EV-01, being executed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the project team has successfully completed 100% of the piling works, installing a total of 3,066 piles between Nehru Nagar and Sholinganallur along Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR).

CMRL has also completed the casting of all 582 precast prestressed U-Girders, marking another key milestone in the construction of the elevated metro corridor.

To commemorate the casting of the final U-Girder, senior officials, including T. Archunan, Director (Projects), CMRL, C. Selvam, General Manager (Track), and Tony Burchell, Team Leader, General Consultant (NKAB), visited the Semmancheri precast yard and ceremonially poured the final batch of concrete.

Executing round-the-clock piling works along the busy OMR corridor required meticulous planning and phased construction while ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow. This was particularly challenging at the Thoraipakkam and Sholinganallur junctions, where two Metro stations are being integrated with existing TNRDC flyovers.

Despite these logistical challenges, the project team achieved a peak productivity of 185 piles in October 2023. The team also successfully overcame difficult hard rock formations at Sholinganallur by adopting optimized engineering techniques and deploying specialized construction equipment.

The successful casting of all 582 precast prestressed U-Girders, including 30-metre viaduct girders and 17.5-metre station girders, was made possible through a dedicated 35-acre precast casting yard established by L&T at Semmancheri.

With meticulous planning across every stage of the precast process from mould fabrication and prestressing to stringent quality control the project achieved a peak production of 40 U-Girders in December 2024.

The completion of both the piling works and U-Girder casting represents a major step toward the timely completion of Chennai Metro Phase-2 Corridor-3, which will provide safer, faster, more reliable, and sustainable public transportation along the OMR corridor.

CMRL expressed its gratitude to local residents, commuters, and stakeholders for their continued patience and cooperation during the construction phase and reaffirmed its commitment to completing the project safely while minimizing inconvenience to the public.
