Chennai Bus Pass Update: Monthly Travel Cards Only for Non-Smartphone Users
The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced a new rule regarding the issuance of monthly travel passes in Chennai. ഇനി, basic (non-smartphone) mobile users and senior citizens who are unable to use smartphones will be given physical monthly bus passes through centres.
The move comes as part of efforts to promote digital usage through the Chennai One app, which already offers digital monthly travel cards for commuters using city buses, suburban trains, and metro services.
Currently, commuters can avail digital passes via the app at:
₹1,000 per month – for non-AC buses
₹2,000 per month – for both AC and non-AC buses
Over 10 lakh users have downloaded the app, and more than 70,000 passengers are already benefiting from digital passes. Despite this, many smartphone users continue to visit centres to obtain physical cards.
To streamline operations and encourage cashless transactions, MTC has now restricted physical pass issuance only to:
- Non-smartphone users
- Elderly passengers unfamiliar with digital usage
Passengers with smartphones are strongly advised to use the app for booking and travel.
