Chennai is currently experiencing bright sunshine, but weather experts warn that rain spells are on the way. According to Tamil Nadu Weatherman, showers are developing both north and south of Chennai, and the city is now surrounded by decent convective clouds.
Today offers the best chance for Chennai to receive 20–40 mm of rainfall, especially before the weather system shifts towards South Tamil Nadu later tonight. The city also witnessed moderate overnight rains.
Delta Districts Heavily Affected
The Delta districts - Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur - experienced intense rainfall last night, adding to the ongoing monsoon activity in the region.
Low-Pressure System to Move into Arabian Sea – Heavy Rains Likely in South Tamil Nadu
As the low-pressure area currently over the Comorin Sea moves westward into the Arabian Sea, several regions in Tamil Nadu are expected to receive significant rainfall.
Forecast for Today and Tomorrow
Moisture pushed inland by the system will bring rains to the interior districts, while South Tamil Nadu will be most affected. The districts likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall include:
- Thoothukudi
- Tenkasi
- Virudhunagar
- Theni
- Kanyakumari
- Tirunelveli (Nellai)
Special caution is advised for Manjolai Hills, which tend to receive intense rains under this weather pattern.
Another System (‘Chakkaram’) May Develop Soon
Tamil Nadu Weatherman also reports that once the current low-pressure system moves into the Arabian Sea, a new circulation - referred to locally as “Chakkaram” - may attempt to form in the Southwest Bay of Bengal after about five days. More details are expected soon.
