After a brief lull following Cyclone Montha, the northeast monsoon has regained momentum and is expected to bring widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu till November 6, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai.

Nearly 50% of weather stations across the State are forecast to record light to moderate rain until Friday (November 7). On Wednesday, heavy rainfall is likely in delta and adjoining districts, including Thanjavur, Tiruchi, and Karaikal. By Thursday, 12 districts such as Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai, Salem, and Tiruvannamalai may experience heavy showers.

In Chennai, light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is expected in some areas on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Poonamallee recorded 3 cm, the highest rainfall in Tamil Nadu for the day.

RMC officials said the wet spell is likely to continue till November 10, helping bring down daytime temperatures across most districts. The showers follow unusually hot conditions Chennai recorded an all-time high November temperature of 35.5°C on Monday, breaking a 26-year-old record.

According to P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, the rainfall is being driven by wind convergence and an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast. He noted that intermittent dry phases are typical during the monsoon season.

Chennai’s maximum temperature is expected to settle around 32–33°C on Wednesday as the rains offer some relief from the heat.
