CMRL Allows Old Metro Smart Card Balance Transfer to QR SVP and NCMC

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is encouraging passengers holding discontinued Contactless Smart Cards (CSC) with unused balances to transfer the remaining amount to newer travel options, including the QR Stored Value Pass (SVP) and Singara Chennai National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).

The balance transfer facility is receiving a positive response from commuters who still have money remaining on their old Chennai Metro travel cards. The initiative helps passengers continue using their unused balance following the withdrawal of the earlier smart card system.

How to Transfer CMRL Smart Card Balance

Passengers with a balance on their old CMRL Contactless Smart Cards can transfer the remaining amount to a QR-based Stored Value Pass (SVP) purchased through the CMRL mobile application. The balance can also be transferred to an eligible NCMC card, including the Singara Chennai Card.

This facility allows commuters to retain access to money already loaded onto their old cards instead of losing the unused balance.

Singara Chennai NCMC Card

The Singara Chennai Card is a contactless prepaid National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) that can be used for public transportation. Depending on the applicable features, the card can also be used for retail transactions and other payments.

The NCMC was introduced in April 2023 as part of efforts to provide a more convenient and integrated payment system for public transport users.

CMRL Advises Passengers to Safeguard Cards

CMRL has advised passengers to keep their travel cards and NCMC cards safe. According to the stated policy, balances on lost travel cards or NCMC cards cannot be transferred or refunded.

Passengers who still have discontinued CMRL smart cards with unused balances can therefore make use of the available migration facility and move their balance to newer ticketing options.
