According to the IMD:
- A low-level atmospheric circulation is prevailing over the southeast Arabian Sea, adjoining the south Kerala coast
- Another upper-level circulation is active over the southeast and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal
These systems are influencing rainfall activity across Tamil Nadu and nearby regions.

IMD has issued a marine advisory for fishermen:
From today till January 7, strong winds of 45–55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph, are likely over:
- Southwest & adjoining Southeast Bay of Bengal
- South Tamil Nadu coastal areas
- Gulf of Mannar
- Kanyakumari Sea
Fishermen are strongly advised not to venture into these sea areas during this period.
