Aadhaar Authentication Made Mandatory for Online Voter Inclusion

Posted on: 02/Jan/2026 2:08:54 PM

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has made Aadhaar authentication compulsory for adding names to the electoral roll through the online process in Tamil Nadu. Under the revised rules, applicants must enter their names exactly as mentioned on their Aadhaar card and ensure that the mobile number linked to Aadhaar is active for OTP verification and e-signing. Without successful Aadhaar authentication, applicants cannot proceed with online name inclusion, marking a significant tightening of the process.

According to ECI officials, the stricter verification was introduced following allegations of electoral roll manipulation raised by political leaders. While earlier applicants could submit forms with basic documents and await verification, the new system verifies applicants before submission itself. Due to name mismatches between Aadhaar and voter ID records, several applicants are now turning to special camps organised by district administrations to correct details or complete their applications offline.
