Chennai Island Grounds Diwali Crackers Sale to Begin on November 3: 30 Shops to Open

The sale of Diwali crackers at Chennai`s Island Grounds (Theevuthidal) will begin on November 3, 2026, and continue until November 10. Preparations are currently underway to set up 30 temporary firecracker shops at the venue.

30 Shops Approved at Island Grounds

The Island Grounds firecracker sale is organised every year ahead of Diwali. However, this year`s arrangements were delayed due to a court case.

Following an order from the Madras High Court, permission has been granted for 30 shops to operate at the venue. The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has initiated the tender process, and shop construction work has been progressing over the past two days.

According to the Chennai Fireworks Traders Association, the arrangements are expected to be completed shortly, allowing sales to begin as scheduled on November 3.

Diwali Crackers Prices Increase by 10% to 15%

Firecracker prices are expected to be 10% to 15% higher this year. Reduced production has been cited as the main reason for the increase, with several fireworks factories in Sivakasi reportedly remaining closed.

Traders have also indicated that the supply of crackers may not be sufficient to meet demand.

Buyers Advised Not to Wait Until the Last Day

Customers planning to purchase crackers at Island Grounds have been advised not to postpone their shopping until the final day. Popular varieties may sell out early due to limited availability.

There are also expected to be fewer new firecracker varieties this year compared with previous years.

The temporary shops at Island Grounds will remain open for sales from November 3 to November 10, providing Chennai residents with a designated location to purchase Diwali crackers.
