The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) removed around 25.2 tonnes of old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture and clothes directly from residents’ homes on Saturday, August 29, based on requests received from the public.

The initiative is part of the Chennai Corporation’s special solid waste collection service, under which municipal workers visit residents’ homes every Saturday to collect and safely dispose of unwanted bulky waste.

Chennai Corporation Collects Old Sofas and Mattresses

According to a statement issued by the Greater Chennai Corporation, the door-to-door collection service has been operating since October last year.

Residents can register in advance to have old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture, clothes and other solid waste collected directly from their homes.

On August 29, the Corporation received requests from 74 residents and collected 25.2 tonnes of old items. The collected waste was transported to the incineration facility at Kodungaiyur, where it was disposed of through scientific methods.

A total of 35 vehicles were used for the collection and transportation process.

How to Book Chennai Corporation Old Waste Collection Service

The Chennai Corporation old sofa and mattress collection service is conducted every Saturday. Residents who want to use the service must register in advance through any of the following options:

- Register through the “Namma Chennai” mobile app

- Call the Chennai Corporation helpline at 1913

- Send details through the Corporation`s dedicated WhatsApp number: 94450 61913

After receiving the request, Chennai Corporation workers will visit the registered address on Saturday and collect the specified items.

Old Furniture and Mattress Disposal in Chennai

The service covers the collection of old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture, clothes and other unwanted solid waste from residents’ homes.

The collected materials are transported and disposed of safely using appropriate scientific methods. The initiative is intended to help residents dispose of bulky household waste properly instead of leaving it on roadsides or in public spaces.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has appealed to residents to make use of the service and ensure the safe and responsible disposal of old household items.
