Chennai Metro Phase 2: CMRL Casts Final Pier for Corridor-5

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has completed the casting of Pier P814, the 513th and final pier for the 11.3-km Phase-2 Corridor-5 package between Ullagaram Metro Station and Elcot Metro Station.

The 25-metre-high pier, located near Medavakkam-1 Metro Station, marks a major milestone in the construction of the corridor.

Engineering Challenges Near Medavakkam

The project includes some of the most challenging elevated metro construction works in this stretch. Between Medavakkam Koot Road and Semmozhi Salai, piers reach heights of nearly 29 metres, with the alignment crossing the existing Medavakkam Flyover.

The section also includes a 57-metre steel girder span along a sharp 125-metre-radius curve, while Medavakkam-1 and Medavakkam-2 Metro Stations are being constructed at around 29 metres above road level.

Despite heavy traffic, dense development and busy market areas, CMRL and its project partners managed the construction through detailed planning, traffic diversions and coordinated execution.

U-Girder and Station Works Next

With all 513 piers now completed, work will focus on the erection of the remaining U-girders and construction of station buildings as Chennai Metro Phase 2 progresses towards its targeted completion.

CMRL Director (Projects) T. Archunan, along with senior officials from CMRL, AEON Consortium and HCC-KEC Consortium, was present during the final pier concreting ceremony.
