Chennai ₹3,108 Crore Water Project: CM Vijay to Lay Foundation Stone Today

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for Chennai’s ₹3,108 crore Main Ring Water Pipeline Project on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The project, to be implemented by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB), aims to improve drinking water distribution across the city and provide greater flexibility in supplying water during shortages.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony is scheduled to take place in Sholinganallur at 4 PM.

What Is Chennai’s Main Ring Water Pipeline Project?

The project aims to connect nine drinking water sources into a ring network, including a desalination plant with a capacity of 400 million litres per day. The interconnected system is designed to help transfer water from one area to another when a particular region faces a shortage.

Chennai receives drinking water from lakes, groundwater sources and desalination plants. The proposed network will connect major water sources and distribution infrastructure to improve the flexibility of the city`s supply system.

98-Km Pipeline Network to Be Developed

The project will involve laying approximately 98 km of corrosion-resistant stainless-steel pipelines. It will also include pumping stations and drinking water distribution pipelines.

According to the report, the network is intended to support water distribution through 84 supply stations, with the system designed to facilitate the distribution of up to 1,200 million litres of drinking water per day.

Asian Development Bank to Support the Project

The ₹3,108 crore project is planned with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). By linking major water sources through a connected pipeline network, the project aims to improve the movement of water across Chennai.

During periods of shortage, the system is expected to allow water to be redirected from areas with sufficient supply to locations experiencing higher demand.

When Will the Foundation Stone Be Laid?

Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled to lay the foundation stone at 4 PM on October 14, 2026, in Sholinganallur, Chennai. The project is intended to strengthen the city`s drinking water distribution infrastructure and improve supply flexibility for residents.
