Chennai GCC to Expand 108 Fish Stalls at Loop Road Market for Rs 48.49 Lakh

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to expand 108 fish stalls at the modernised fish market on Loop Road, increasing each stall from 30 sq ft to 50 sq ft. The work is estimated to cost Rs 48.49 lakh.

However, the move has faced opposition from local fishermen and fish vendors, who want to continue operating along the roadside near the beach. Vendors said they previously suffered financial losses after being shifted to the new market, as customers preferred buying fish from the traditional roadside stalls.

They also raised concerns about the market`s design, including poor ventilation, excessive heat from the metal roofing and water splashing into the stalls during heavy rains.

According to fish vendors, demolition work had started but was later paused while the GCC held discussions to reach an agreement. The Corporation has also conducted a willingness survey among vendors regarding relocation to the modernised market.

The market currently has 362 fish stalls, each measuring 6 feet by 5 feet. Following feedback, the GCC plans to modify selected stalls to 10 feet by 5 feet.

A senior GCC official said five stalls were resized on a trial basis and the changes were successful. Tenders have been called, with work expected to begin on September 10. The modifications will initially cover stalls on the western and southern sides, followed by the northern section.
