Cyclone Murasu: 12 Trees Uprooted, Houses and Vehicles Damaged in Chennai

Heavy rains triggered by severe cyclonic storm Murasu uprooted at least 12 trees across Chennai on Monday, damaging two houses, more than 10 cars and three two-wheelers. Several roads were inundated, prompting the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to deploy emergency response teams and water pumps.

Trees Fall Across Chennai, Vehicles Damaged

At the TNEB headquarters on Anna Salai, an uprooted peepal tree fell on parked vehicles, damaging more than 10 cars and two-wheelers. A driver trapped inside a car was rescued by emergency personnel after they broke open the door. He sustained minor injuries.

In Karpagam Garden, Adyar, a 50-year-old tree fell on the roof of an adjoining house on First Cross Street. In Perambur, a large rain tree on Sivagnanam Street fell on a house and two parked motorcycles.

A roadside tree also fell on Dr Rangan Road in Abiramapuram, damaging a car belonging to a Mylapore resident.

Other incidents were reported on Gandhi Irwin Road, Puzhal Sivagam Street, G Block 12th Street in Anna Nagar and LDG Road in Adyar.

Police, Corporation workers and Fire and Rescue Services personnel cleared fallen trees and restored traffic movement.

Waterlogging in Several Areas

Overnight rainfall caused water stagnation on roads in North Chennai and central parts of the city. Corporation teams cleared affected stretches in Manali, Tondiarpet, Royapuram and Teynampet.

GCC Commissioner G S Sameeran said minor inundation occurred in several subways and low-lying areas, but water was quickly drained using heavy-duty pumps.

NDRF Team Deployed for Emergency Response

Following a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary, a 30-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team was mobilised from Arakkonam and stationed in Tiruvottiyur.

The team is equipped with rescue equipment, life jackets, diving gear and medical supplies. A State Disaster Response Force team was also kept on standby.

The Corporation has prepared 215 relief centres with food, emergency supplies and medical facilities for residents who may require evacuation.

Chennai Corporation Allocates ₹21.80 Crore for Road Repairs

The GCC has launched monsoon-related road repair works across all 15 zones. Twelve repair vehicles were flagged off from Ripon Building to carry out repairs using concrete mix and cold-mix asphalt.

The Corporation has sanctioned ₹21.80 crore for the works, including ₹9.25 crore for bus route roads and ₹12.55 crore for interior roads.
