Tamil Nadu TASMAC Payment Rules 2026: Digital Payments Mandatory for Purchases Above ₹1,000

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is set to introduce new digital payment rules at liquor retail outlets across the state, according to a report published on October 27, 2026. Under the reported changes, customers purchasing liquor worth more than ₹1,000 must pay through digital methods, including UPI, from November 1, 2026.

The payment threshold is expected to be reduced further from January 1, 2027. From that date, digital payments will reportedly be mandatory for liquor purchases exceeding ₹500.

Digital Payment Rules at TASMAC Shops

According to the report, the new payment system will be introduced in stages:

From November 1, 2026: Digital payment will be mandatory for purchases above ₹1,000.

From January 1, 2027: Digital payment will be mandatory for purchases above ₹500.

Customers may be required to use UPI or other accepted electronic payment methods when their purchases exceed the applicable limits.

Official Bank Accounts and Payment Machines

TASMAC outlets have reportedly been instructed to ensure that payment machines are connected to the organisation`s authorised bank accounts. Collecting payments through employees` personal bank accounts may invite disciplinary action.

The reported instructions also require shops to issue a bill for every sale. Customers should not be charged more than the amount printed on the bill.

Staff have also been instructed to hand over liquor only after confirming that the digital payment has been completed and the amount has been received.

Why Is TASMAC Introducing Digital Payments?

The reported move aims to address several challenges associated with handling cash at liquor outlets. These include security risks from storing large amounts of cash, counterfeit currency, shortages of change and the need for greater transparency in transactions.

Digital payments could also help improve the tracking of sales and reduce disputes over the amounts collected at retail counters.

Customers should check for official TASMAC announcements regarding the implementation of these rules, accepted payment methods and any exceptions before relying on the reported changes.
