Chennai MTC Plans 300 Electric Mini Buses; Tender Issued to Boost Last-Mile Connectivity
The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has planned to introduce 300 electric mini buses in the city to strengthen public transport and improve last-mile connectivity.
As part of this initiative, MTC has invited tenders to operate these buses under a contract model. The move aims to enhance transport services in areas with narrow roads and dense traffic, where regular buses face difficulty operating.
Officials said these mini buses will help connect residential neighbourhoods with major transport hubs such as metro stations and railway stations, making daily travel more convenient for commuters.
The introduction of electric buses is also expected to reduce air pollution and promote eco-friendly transportation in Chennai. With growing traffic congestion in the city, this step is seen as an important move towards sustainable urban mobility.
Once the tender process is completed, the buses will be deployed in phases across different parts of Chennai.
