Tamil Nadu Power Demand Rises 12% as Hottest August Drives Cooling Needs

Tamil Nadu saw a sharp rise in electricity demand in August 2026, as unusually high temperatures pushed up the use of air conditioners, air-coolers and other cooling appliances.

The State recorded a peak power demand of 21,615 MW in August, up 12.14% from 19,275 MW during the same month in 2025. Electricity consumption also increased 12.66%, rising from 11,271 MU to 12,699 MU.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), August 2026 was the hottest August in India since 1901, with the country`s mean temperature reaching 28.01°C, 0.67°C above the long-period average.

Tamil Nadu`s daily power consumption crossed 400 MU on 25 days in August, compared with only two days in August 2025. The highest daily consumption reached 459 MU, against 422 MU last year.

Peak demand also crossed 20,000 MW on 16 days, with the maximum reaching 21,615 MW. The increase follows a record-breaking July, when Tamil Nadu recorded an all-time high peak demand of 21,724 MW.

TNPDCL officials said prolonged heat and humidity led to increased use of ACs, air-coolers, induction stoves and other electrical appliances, driving up power demand across homes, businesses and industries.
