Tamil Nadu Government Model Schools Renamed as Vettri Schools: Official Order Issued

The Tamil Nadu Government has announced a name change for government model schools functioning across the state. According to the latest order, these institutions will now be known as Vettri Schools instead of Government Model Schools.

The announcement was officially issued by R. Sudhan, Member Secretary of the Government Model Schools initiative.

Government Model Schools in Tamil Nadu

The Government Model Schools scheme was launched during the 2021–22 academic year to improve the quality of education and provide better learning opportunities for students studying in government schools.

Under this initiative, one model school was established in each of Tamil Nadu`s 38 districts. These schools provide education along with facilities such as food and accommodation. Around 2,000 students are reported to be studying in these institutions.

Modern Facilities at Vettri Schools

The schools offer several facilities to support students` academic and overall development, including:

- Smart classrooms and digital learning facilities

- Computer and internet access

- Well-equipped science laboratories

- Fine arts training

- Sports grounds and facilities

- Food and residential accommodation

These facilities are intended to provide students with a supportive learning environment within a single campus.

Entrance Exam Coaching and Higher Education Guidance

Apart from regular academic education, students receive guidance and coaching for entrance examinations to leading higher education institutions, including IITs and NITs. NEET coaching and other higher education guidance are also provided.

According to the report, more than 1,800 students from these schools have secured opportunities to study at leading higher education institutions in India and abroad.

Other Tamil Nadu Government Scheme Name Changes

The report also highlights changes to the names of certain other government initiatives:

Naan Mudhalvan: Renamed as Thiran Tamil Nadu, with skill development training continuing under the revised name.

Magalir Vidiyal Payanam: Renamed as Vettri Payanam, referring to the free bus travel scheme for women.

Chief Minister`s Breakfast Scheme: Renamed as Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme. The programme has also been expanded to cover students from Classes 6 to 8, according to the report.

The renaming of Government Model Schools as Vettri Schools marks another change in the naming of Tamil Nadu government initiatives. The schools are expected to continue their educational and residential support for students under the new name.
