Chennai Heavy Rain: Over 20 Flight Services Affected at Chennai Airport, Passengers Face Flooding

Heavy overnight rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning disrupted flight operations at Chennai International Airport, affecting more than 20 flight services. Passengers also faced difficulties due to waterlogging near the airport`s arrival terminals and vehicle pickup areas.

Heavy rain began in Chennai and its suburban areas on Saturday evening, October 17, 2026, and continued into Sunday morning. Adverse weather conditions prevented several flights from landing on schedule, resulting in delays and diversions.

Flights Diverted Due to Heavy Rain in Chennai

More than 10 incoming flights from cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Hyderabad and Kolkata reportedly circled in the air for extended periods while awaiting suitable landing conditions.

An IndiGo flight arriving from Kolkata with 184 passengers was unable to land in Chennai and was diverted to Hyderabad. After the rain eased, flights waiting in the air gradually landed at Chennai Airport.

Several domestic and international departures were also delayed by approximately one to two hours. Flights bound for Madurai, Kochi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune and Delhi, as well as international destinations such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sri Lanka, Frankfurt and Abu Dhabi, were among the services affected.

Waterlogging Creates Problems for Airport Passengers

Heavy rainfall caused water to accumulate around the airport`s arrival areas, including roads used by vehicles picking up passengers from the domestic and international terminals.

Passengers arriving at open parking stands without aerobridge access faced difficulties walking through rainwater to board pickup vehicles. Some travellers wearing shoes found it particularly challenging to move through the waterlogged areas.

Vehicles waiting to collect passengers also struggled to stop and move through the flooded roads, creating further inconvenience for passengers and their relatives.

Airport Arrival Roads Affected by Rainwater

Waterlogging along the arrival-side roads disrupted vehicle movement and made passenger pickups difficult. Some traffic barricades were reportedly displaced by the flow of rainwater.

With flight delays coinciding with the waterlogging, passengers faced additional waiting times and difficulties reaching their vehicles after landing.

Chennai Airport Rain Disruption Highlights Need for Better Drainage

The incident highlights the challenges heavy monsoon rainfall can create for airport operations and passenger movement. Efficient drainage, effective water management and safe access to terminal pickup areas are essential to minimise disruption during intense rainfall.

Passengers travelling through Chennai Airport during heavy rain are advised to check their flight status with their respective airlines and allow additional time for airport transnsfers.
