Sri Chennakesava Perumal Temple Chennai: History, Timings and How to Reach

Sri Chennakesava Perumal Temple, located in George Town, Chennai, is a historic Vaishnavite temple dedicated to Sri Chennakesava Perumal and Sri Kamalavalli Thayar. The present temple was reconstructed in 1762 CE by Manali Muthukrishna Mudaliar after the original temple was demolished during the British period.

The temple features a three tier Rajagopuram, sanctum sanctorum, ardha mandapam and mukha mandapam. The pillars and ceilings of the mandapams feature intricate carvings, including floral designs, parrots, lotus medallions, Krishna Leela scenes and other artistic reliefs. Separate shrines are dedicated to the Alwars, Andal, Kothanda Ramar, Chakrathalwar and Sengamalavalli Thayar.

The temple has an important connection with the nearby Sri Chenna Malleeswarar Temple. Both temples share the temple tank and chariot, and an interlinking passage connects the two shrines.

Sri Chennakesava Perumal Temple is located in George Town, Chennai. It is around 500 metres from Broadway Bus Terminus and approximately 200 metres from Pookadai Police Station. The temple is about 1.5 km from Fort Suburban Railway Station, making it accessible by bus, train, taxi and other local transport.
