Pattinathar Temple, located on the shores of the Bay of Bengal in Tiruvottriyur, Tamil Nadu, is a unique and spiritually significant shrine dedicated to Saint Pattinathar, who is revered as a form of Lord Shiva. Unlike many traditional temples, this temple does not have a towering gopuram or vimanam. The saint is enshrined in a Linga form placed on a square peeta, facing the sea, symbolizing detachment and spiritual liberation.

The sacred Nagabarana (divine serpent ornament) is placed on the Linga, and all pujas are performed as they would be for Lord Shiva. Devotees believe that Pattinathar, who lived as an ascetic, blesses those who surrender their worries without making vows. It is traditionally advised not to make prayer commitments here, but instead to offer prayers with pure devotion.

Inside the temple, Sri Nandikeswara is positioned opposite the main shrine. Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga are present in the front mandap, while Sri Chandikeswara graces the prakara. There are 27 lamps in the shrine representing the 27 stars, and they are lit using ghee.

The temple entrance is deliberately low, requiring devotees to bow while entering, symbolizing humility. Sacred ash used in abhishekam is given as prasadam. It is also believed that Kubera, the Lord of Wealth, was born as Pattinathar, and hence devotees pray here for prosperity and well-being.
