5 Best Yoga Poses to Improve Ankle Mobility, Flexibility and Balance

Ankle mobility plays an important role in balance, stability, and everyday movement. The ankles and surrounding muscles support much of the body`s weight, making them essential for walking and practising yoga safely.

Limited ankle mobility, particularly in dorsiflexion (when the top of the foot moves closer to the shin), may affect movement and increase the risk of lower-limb injuries. Research suggests that targeted exercises, including yoga poses, may help improve ankle mobility and support better movement.

These five yoga poses combine stretching, strengthening, and balance to help improve ankle mobility. Practise them gently, and ease out of any position that causes pain or discomfort.

5 Yoga Poses for Ankle Mobility

1. Chair Pose (Utkatasana)

Chair Pose may look like a simple sitting position, but it engages the legs, glutes, core, and ankles. The pose requires the ankles to bend forward into dorsiflexion, helping develop mobility and strength in the surrounding muscles.

To practise, stand with your feet firmly on the floor, bend your knees, and push your hips back as if sitting in an imaginary chair. Keep your chest lifted and your weight balanced across your feet.

2. Bound Angle Pose (Baddha Konasana)

Bound Angle Pose offers a gentle stretch for the feet and ankles while allowing the lower body to relax.

Sit comfortably with your knees bent and the soles of your feet together. Let your knees fall outward naturally and hold your feet with your hands. Keep your spine upright and avoid forcing your knees towards the floor.

This pose provides a gentle release for the muscles around the inner thighs, feet, and ankles.

3. Garland Pose (Malasana)

Garland Pose, also known as the yogic squat, challenges ankle mobility by requiring the ankles to bend deeply while supporting the body`s weight. It can also help improve lower-body flexibility and balance.

Stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width apart and lower your hips into a comfortable squat. Keep your chest lifted and your feet grounded. If your heels do not reach the floor, place a rolled yoga mat or blanket beneath them for support.

Avoid forcing yourself into a deep squat if your ankles or knees feel uncomfortable.

4. Eagle Pose (Garudasana)

Eagle Pose challenges balance and strengthens the muscles that support the ankles. Wrapping one leg around the standing leg also introduces a different position for the feet and lower legs.

Stand tall, bend your knees slightly, and cross one thigh over the other. If possible, wrap the upper foot behind the standing calf. Keep your standing foot firmly grounded and maintain your balance with controlled breathing.

Practise on both sides, using a wall or chair for support if needed.

5. Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana)

Half Moon Pose combines balance, strength, and controlled movement. The standing ankle works to stabilise the body, while the lifted leg helps develop coordination and lower-body control.

Begin in a standing position and lean forward, placing one hand on the floor or a yoga block. Shift your weight onto one foot and lift the opposite leg until it is approximately parallel to the floor. Keep your standing foot grounded andnd open your chest as comfortably as possible.

Hold the pose briefly, then repeat on the other side. Use a wall or block for additional support if necessary.
