Thiruvanmiyur History: How an Ancient Temple Village Became a Chennai IT Hub

From the historic Marundeeswarar Temple to the bustling IT corridor around Taramani and OMR, Thiruvanmiyur has evolved dramatically while retaining its deep cultural and coastal identity.

Thiruvanmiyur, also spelled Tiruvanmiyur, is one of the oldest localities in Chennai. Today, it is known for its residential neighbourhoods, connectivity and proximity to the city’s major IT hubs. But long before the rise of Tidel Park and the OMR corridor, the area was closely associated with temples, coastal life and ancient traditions.

How Did Thiruvanmiyur Get Its Name?

The origin of the name Thiruvanmiyur is commonly linked to “Thiru-Valmiki-Oor”, meaning the sacred place of Sage Valmiki, the legendary author of the Ramayana.

According to local tradition, Valmiki performed penance in this area and attained salvation, giving the locality its religious significance. Another interpretation connects the name with “Thiru-aamai-yur,” meaning “city of turtles.” This explanation is associated with the area`s coastal setting and the presence of turtles along the beach.

Marundeeswarar Temple: The Heart of Thiruvanmiyur

The historic Marundeeswarar Temple remains the cultural and spiritual centre of Thiruvanmiyur.

The temple is considered to be around 1,300 years old, with references to the shrine in the hymns of Saivite saints Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar, who lived during the 7th century CE.

The present stone structure largely reflects the Chola period, beginning from the 9th century, with later additions associated with the Vijayanagara rulers. The temple also contains numerous stone inscriptions, including important records dating to the 11th century.

Lord Shiva is worshipped here as Marundeeswarar, or the “Lord of Medicine.” According to temple tradition, Shiva appeared as a physician to Chandra, the Moon god, and also blessed Sage Valmiki.

The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams and is among the three coastal Paadal Petra Sthalams in Chennai.

From Residential Area to IT Destination

Thiruvanmiyur is located in south Chennai along the Bay of Bengal, close to Adyar, Besant Nagar, Valmiki Nagar and Taramani.

For decades, it remained primarily a residential neighbourhood. Its character began changing significantly with the development of Tidel Park in neighbouring Taramani, which became Chennai’s first dedicated technology office complex.

The growth of IT companies, research institutions and offices around Tidel Park brought a large working population to the area. As a result, demand for apartments, rental homes, restaurants, shops and other amenities increased.

Today, Thiruvanmnmiyur sits at the intersection of Chennai`s traditional residential landscape and its modern technology-driven economy.

A Locality Shaped by the Coast

Despite rapid urbanisation, Thiruvanmiyur continues to retain its coastal character. Thiruvanmiyur Beach remains an important landmark, with fishing activity forming part of the area`s traditional identity.

The association with turtles also adds an ecological dimension to the locality`s history and coastal landscape.

Thiruvanmiyur’s Historical Legacy

Historical records further underline the area`s antiquity. An 895 AD inscription reportedly mentions “Aamiyur,” while inscriptions also refer to visits by Rajendra Chola I, who ruled between 1012 and 1044 AD.

The Marundeeswarar Temple occupies around one acre, while the commonly cited PIN code for the temple and core locality is 600041.

From ancient inscriptions and Chola-era worship to modern technology offices and growing residential demand, Thiruvanmiyur`s story reflects Chennai`s broader transformation. It is a locality where temple heritage, coastal traditions and modern urban growth continue to exist side by side.
