People for Chennai: Freezing Fleeting Moments - The Story of Rtn. Lakshmanan Veerappan

Every city has its own rhythm, but Chennai has a particularly visual character from the golden glow over the Marina to the heritage architecture of Mylapore and the everyday moments unfolding across its streets. Capturing that spirit requires more than technical skill; it takes patience, observation and a genuine connection with the city.

This World Photography Day, August 19, People for Chennai turns the spotlight on Rtn. Lakshmanan Veerappan, founder and Creative Director of Madras Visual Media, whose journey has been shaped by a passion for visual storytelling and a commitment to nurturing the next generation of photographers.

The Architect Behind the Lens

Although Lakshmanan Veerappan began his professional career as a management systems consultant, photography has remained a constant passion. Through Madras Visual Media, he has brought together traditional photographic aesthetics and modern digital techniques, documenting everything from major corporate events and fine-art projects to the candid moments of everyday Chennai life.

His photographs go beyond simply recording an image. They capture the atmosphere, emotion and stories behind a moment turning fleeting experiences into lasting memories.

His contribution to photography also extends to education. Through workshops and training programmes, he has mentored hundreds of aspiring photographers and creators across Tamil Nadu. Rather than focusing only on technical aspects such as aperture, shutter speed and composition, he encourages students to develop the most important skill of all: the ability to observe. His approach inspires them to look at familiar surroundings differently and discover beauty in ordinary moments.

Service Beyond Photography

Lakshmanan`s connection with Chennai extends well beyond his work behind the camera. As Rtn. Lakshmanan, he has played an active role in Rotary activities, including leadership development initiatives, wellness programmes and community-focused projects.

Through his involvement with Rotary District 3232/3233 and the Rotary Club of Madras Esplanade, he has contributed his experience and creative perspective to initiatives aimed at strengthening communities and developing future leaders.

His work reflects a simple but powerful idea: the ability to observe the world closely can also help us understand and improve the communities around us.

Celebrating Chennai Through Photography

World Photography Day is an opportunity to celebrate the power of photography to preserve memories, tell stories and connect people. The 2026 theme, “HOME,” invites photographers to explore what home means not simply as a physical place, but as a feeling, a memory and a sense of belonging.

For Lakshmanan, Chennai itself has been a lifelong source of inspiration. Its streets, people, heritage and evolving identity continue to provide endless stories waiting to be captured.

Through Madras Visual Media, he continues to document those stories while encouraging others to pick up a camera and discover their own perspective.

On World Photography Day, LiveChennai celebrates Rtn. Lakshmanan Veerappan for his contribution to photography, mentorship and community service, and for helping preserve the visual memories of Chennai for generations to come.

Happy World Photography Day, Rtn. Lakshmanan Veerappan! May your lens continue to capture the light, stories and spirit of Chennai.
