The Chennai Metro Rail Limited has recorded a steady increase in passenger numbers, with the average daily ridership reaching 4.64 lakh commuters in Chennai. The growth highlights the rising preference for metro travel among city residents.

Data released by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs shows that Chennai Metro usage has grown significantly in recent years. The average daily ridership was around 1.90 lakh in 2021-22, which increased to 3.41 lakh in 2022-23 and further rose to 4.58 lakh in 2023-24. By December 2025, the ridership reached 4.64 lakh passengers per day.

Officials say the increase in metro usage is due to better connectivity, expansion of metro corridors, and improved last-mile transport options. The metro network has become one of the most reliable and convenient modes of public transport in Chennai, helping commuters avoid traffic congestion and reduce travel time.

With ongoing expansion projects and improved connectivity across major areas, the Chennai Metro system is expected to attract even more passengers in the coming years, strengthening the city’s urban transportation network.
