Perambur to Get 13 Modern Sewer-Cleaning Machines, CMWSSB Invites Tenders

The Tamil Nadu government has invited tenders to procure 13 modern machines for cleaning underground sewer lines in Perambur, Chennai, following a direction from Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. The procurement will be funded through the allocation for the constituency.

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) has initiated the tender process to strengthen mechanised sewer-cleaning operations and improve sewage network maintenance.

CMWSSB to Procure Three Types of Sewer-Cleaning Machines

The proposed procurement includes three-wheeled and four-wheeled desilting machines, jet-rodding machines and super sucker machines.

Desilting machines: Remove accumulated sludge and sediment from sewer lines.

Jet-rodding machines: Use high-pressure water jets to clear blockages.

Super sucker machines: Use vacuum technology to remove sewage, sludge and other waste.

The new equipment is expected to help CMWSSB clear blockages more efficiently and improve the maintenance of Chennai`s underground sewer network.

Tender Process Through National Competitive Bidding

The procurement will follow the National Competitive Bidding system with a two-cover procedure, under which technical and financial bids are submitted separately for evaluation.

A key objective of the initiative is to reduce the need for sanitation workers to enter underground sewer systems for cleaning. Such work can expose workers to toxic gases, hazardous substances and potentially life-threatening conditions.

The introduction of specialised machinery is expected to improve worker safety, reduce dependence on hazardous manual sewer cleaning and make maintenance operations more efficient.

The initiative marks another step towards mechanised sewer maintenance in Chennai, with the proposed machines expected to support safer and more effective sewage management in Perambur.
