Cyclone Murasu: Tamil Nadu Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Chennai and Several Districts

The Tamil Nadu government has directed district administrations to strengthen disaster preparedness as Cyclone Murasu moves towards the south Andhra Pradesh coast, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected in several parts of Tamil Nadu.

The Tamil Nadu Disaster Risk Reduction Agency (TNDRRA) reported that the storm was over the Bay of Bengal, approximately 480 km east-southeast of Chennai, moving west-northwestwards.

Cyclone Murasu is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday morning and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapuram between Monday night and early Tuesday.

Although the cyclone is forecast to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh, northern Tamil Nadu is likely to experience significant rainfall.

Chennai and Tamil Nadu Rainfall Forecast

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has issued the following rainfall forecast:

Tiruvallur: Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday.

Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet and the Nilgiris: Heavy rainfall is likely.

Residents in these districts are advised to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions.

Strong Winds and Rough Sea Conditions

Winds along the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts are expected to reach 60–70 kmph, with gusts up to 80 kmph, from Monday evening to Tuesday morning.

The sea is likely to remain very rough, with waves reaching four to six metres and reduced visibility until Wednesday morning.

Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until the morning of November 4.

Those already fishing in deep waters have been instructed to return immediately to the nearest harbour or coast.

Tamil Nadu Government Strengthens Disaster Preparedness

The Commissionerate of Revenue Administration and Disaster Management has directed district collectors to follow disaster-management procedures, mobilise district-level administrative machinery and implement precautionary measures.

District authorities must also promptly report any untoward incidents to facilitate emergency response and relief operations.

Safety Advisory for Residents

Residents in affected districts are advised to:

- Avoid beaches and coastal roads during severe weather.

- Stay away from waterlogged underpasses.

- Keep away from fallen electrical wires and power lines.

- Follow official weather forecasts and disaster management advisories.

Authoritities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with local administration during the cyclone-related weather conditions.
