Sankatahara Chaturthi 2026: Date, Fasting and Worship Details

Introduction

According to the lunar calendar, Sankatahara Chaturthi is observed on the fourth lunar day after the full moon. Devotees observe a fast and worship Lord Ganesha on this day, seeking relief from difficulties and obstacles.

Sankatahara Chaturthi, also known as Sankashti Chaturthi, is considered an important day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. The word “Sankata” refers to difficulties or troubles, while “Hara” means removal. Therefore, Sankatahara refers to seeking relief from difficulties and suffering.

Sankatahara Chaturthi 2026

Sankatahara Chaturthi is observed every month. Devotees traditionally wake up early, take a bath and worship Lord Ganesha. Many devotees observe a fast throughout the day and perform Ganesha pooja in the evening. The fast is traditionally concluded after worshipping the Moon and offering prayers to Lord Ganesha.

Sankatahara Chaturthi that falls on a Tuesday is considered particularly significant and is known as Angaraka Chaturthi. It is observed with special importance in Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Vinayaka Chaturthi, which commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha, is observed separately each year during the Chaturthi tithi in the Tamil month of Avani.

The Sankatahara Chaturthi preceding Vinayaka Chaturthi is traditionally known as Maha Sankatahara Chaturthi.
