Chennai Infrastructure Boost: 780 Roads Covering 160 Km to Get Rs 150 Crore Upgrade

The Greater Chennai Corporation is set to upgrade 160 km of damaged bus route and interior roads across the city at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore as part of the first phase of the road improvement programme.

The Chennai Corporation currently maintains 488 bus route roads covering 418.56 km and 35,978 interior roads covering 565.89 km.

Under a 2026-27 financial year announcement made by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister under Rule 110, around 360 km of bus route and interior roads within the Greater Chennai Corporation limits will be improved at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore.

As part of the first phase, detailed project reports have been prepared to improve 780 damaged roads covering 160 km across Zones 1 to 15.

This includes 66 bus route roads covering 45.13 km and 714 interior roads covering 114.87 km. The estimated cost of the first-phase works is Rs 150 crore.

The detailed project reports have been submitted to the Tamil Nadu Government for administrative approval. Once approved, the road improvement works are expected to cover several parts of Chennai.
