LPG Subsidy: Aadhaar Biometric Authentication Required from October 1

Consumers who want to continue receiving subsidies on domestic LPG cylinders will be required to complete Aadhaar biometric authentication from October 1, according to the government’s latest directive.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has introduced the requirement to ensure that subsidised LPG cylinders reach eligible households and to prevent domestic LPG connections from being diverted for commercial or industrial use. Linking LPG connections with Aadhaar-authenticated consumers is also intended to identify and remove duplicate or ineligible connections.

How to Complete Aadhaar Biometric Authentication

Consumers who have already completed Aadhaar biometric authentication do not need to repeat the process and can continue booking LPG cylinders as usual.

Those who have not completed the authentication will need to do so to continue receiving LPG cylinders at the subsidised rate.

The authentication process can be completed through the mobile application used by delivery personnel during cylinder delivery or through the apps of the respective oil marketing companies (OMCs).

LPG Apps for Biometric Authentication

Indane: IndianOil ONE app

Bharatgas: HelloBPCL app

HP Gas: HP PAY app

Consumers who do not wish to complete Aadhaar biometric authentication can still purchase LPG cylinders. However, they will have to pay the applicable market price instead of receiving the subsidy. Such consumers can register their preference through the oil companies’ digital platforms, including websites, mobile apps, WhatsApp chatbots and IVRS services.

Depending on availability, 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders may be provided to consumers who opt for non-subsidised LPG.

According to official government data, 27.43 crore domestic LPG consumers had completed Aadhaar biometric authentication as of September 19, accounting for nearly 90% of the total consumer base.

Public sector oil marketing companies are also carrying out awareness campaigns through SMS and WhatsApp messages, visits by delivery personnel, special registration camps and digital platforms.

As of September 2026, the subsidy on a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder was ₹210. The government has stated that the authentication process is intended to ensure that subsidies reach eligible beneficiaries and help address the financial burden faced by public sector oil companies.
