Chennai is all set to witness the return of iconic double-decker buses in a modern, eco-friendly avatar. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has announced plans to introduce open-roof electric double-decker buses as part of its public transport modernization initiative.
20 Electric Double-Deckers Planned for Chennai
According to official sources, MTC plans to procure:
- 16 air-conditioned electric double-decker buses
- 4 open-roof electric double-decker buses
These buses will operate under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model, which includes maintenance and charging infrastructure support.
Open-Roof Buses to Offer Unique Travel Experience
The open-roof electric double-decker buses are expected to provide:
- Panoramic city views
- Tourist-friendly travel experience
- Zero tailpipe emissions
- Quieter and smoother rides
This initiative combines nostalgia with sustainability, as double-decker buses were once a familiar sight on Chennai roads decades ago.
Boost to Chennai’s Green Transport Mission
The introduction of electric double-decker buses aligns with Tamil Nadu’s broader plan to:
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Promote clean energy mobility
- Modernize public transportation
- Enhance commuter comfort
MTC may also expand the fleet by up to 25% within a year, depending on operational success.
