New Thiruneermalai Toll Plaza to Offer Faster Access to Airport and IT Corridor

Posted on: 03/Nov/2025 11:40:30 AM

Motorists from Chennai’s northern and western suburbs will soon enjoy a faster route to the airport and IT Corridor, with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) planning new entry and exit ramps at the upcoming Thiruneermalai toll plaza on the Chennai Bypass.

The new plaza, replacing the Vanagaram toll, is part of a ₹63.23-crore project aimed at easing congestion, improving safety, and enhancing connectivity to the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) and southern Chennai.

Key features of the project include:

- A six-lane vehicular underpass at Vanagaram junction.
- A new six-lane toll plaza at Thiruneermalai.
Entry and exit ramps connecting to MEPZ and GST Road.
- A pedestrian foot overbridge near Decathlon, Ambattur.
- A causeway across the Cooum River near Maduravoyal.
- Upgrades to the Surapattu toll plaza.

According to an NHAI official, the relocation will reduce bottlenecks and accidents at Vanagaram by diverting local traffic to service roads. The new six-lane toll setup will allow smoother movement and quicker toll collection.

Motorists say the proposed Thiruneermalai exit will save time for those travelling towards Velachery, Pallikaranai, OMR, and ECR via Pallavaram.

The project also addresses pedestrian safety through the planned foot overbridge, benefiting residents in rapidly developing Ambattur areas.

The state government had earlier proposed an elevated corridor linking Pallavaram to the bypass via Thiruneermalai, but the plan was later dropped.

Once completed, the new infrastructure is expected to cut travel time and ease congestion across Chennai’s growing suburban network.
