Sensational!! Detecting type 2 diabetes in people in advance - IIT-Madras!!
Changing the future of diabetes care across the world in the future!! How can this be achieved?
The answer to this question is that IIT-M or Indian Institute of Technology- Madras has joined hands with SLGS or Sun Life Global Solutions for early diagnosis and better management of type 2 diabetes.
It is worth noting that the research would focus on pancreastatin as a biomarker and would explore 10 to 12 genetic markers that would predict diabetes risk years in advance even in the children also. This was as per SLGS in a statement yesterday. By this research work, there would be improved health outcomes plus the future of diabetes care would change across the world by identifying those at risk earlier itself.
It was brought out by MD of SLGS Mr.Tarun Sareen that the research could change the standard approach of diabetes diagnosis. It is now said that IIT-M would spearhead the research through its advanced biomedical research facilities.
According to Mr. Nitish R. Mohapatra, professor of biotechnology and BJM School of Biosciences at IIT-M this research would address the urgent healthcare challenge. He spoke about how identifying pancreastatin as a reliable early biomarker for type 2 diabetes could result in a paradigm shift in prevention strategies for type2 diabetes.
It has been confirmed by the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas 2025 report that across the world that 11.1% or one in nine adult population 20 to 79 years old has been living with diabetes. What is really shocking is the fact that 4 out of 10 don`t know that they have diabetes in them.
As per WHO or World Health Organisation, there are 77 million people above the age of 18 years with type-2 diabetes and nearly 25million are pre-diabetic.
