Upgrade in public transportation hubs in Chennai soon - Things to know!!

New Ambattur bus terminus will be inaugurated next month is known. After that many other facilities would also be inaugurated in Chennai. The public transportation hubs in Chennai would be witnessing an upgrade soon.

For better upkeep and for better commuter friendly services, these bus terminuses would be operated and maintained by the private concessionaires for 3 years under private public partnership model or PPP model.

On 25th August, 2 bus terminuses like Periyar bus terminus and Thiru Vi ka bus terminus were inaugurated adding 24 bus bays, 20 shops, toilets and waiting areas at nearly Rs 18 cr. It must be noted that the Ambattur project would cover 1.6acres and would cost Rs 17.34 cr. There would be a 26000 sq ft building with an MTC administration office. Atleast 5 more facilities would be ready by the end of the year. Information is that in October Rs 97 cr bus terminus at Chengalpet and Rs 8.1 cr Mullainagar bus terminus would be completed.

Kannadasan bus terminus in Perambur would be inaugurated in November followed by the Tondiarpet depot modernisation in December. By December, 4 small bus stops in places like Kolathur, Perumbur, Royapuram and Harbour would also be completed. Pont is that each bus stop would cost Rs 2 crores.

It was mentioned by the CMDA minister Mr. P. Sekar Babu that soon there would be a complete redesigning of bus stops and terminuses etc in Chennai. Mr. G. Prakash, CMDA member secretary spoke about how several projects like Rs 90.5 cr Mamallapuram bus terminus in February, Rs 414 cr Kuthambakkam bus terminus in October and redevelopment of bus terminuses at places like Iyyappanthangal, Thiruvanmiyur, Avadi, Padianallur, Vallalar Nagar etc are scheduled in 2026.

Activities like cleaning, painting, annual repairs, toilet maintenance etc would be handled by concessionaires under the PPP model.
