Chennai Metro Stretch from Koyambedu to Nandambakkam to Be Completed by June 2026

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced that the Koyambedu to Chennai Trade Centre stretch via Alapakkam, part of Phase-II Corridor 5, is expected to be completed by June 2026.

Following a successful trial run between Porur Junction and Poonamallee Bypass on June 6, CMRL Managing Director M.A. Siddique confirmed that the extension from Porur to Power House and Koyambedu to Alapakkam will also be completed within the next year.

Commuters traveling from Koyambedu to Chennai Trade Centre will have interchange options at four stations: Alapakkam, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, and Alwarthirunagar.

The initial trial run on the downline track began with trains running at 20–25 kmph, which will be gradually increased to 90 kmph. Six train sets have been received, and the signalling system testing will commence soon.

Construction challenges were encountered between Karayanchavadi and Kattupakkam due to a planned flyover. Station works between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction are expected to be completed within three months.

Although the new trains are designed to be driverless, operators will be onboard initially. CMRL is currently recruiting and training operators, with training set to continue through December 2025.

The first operational stretch from Poonamallee Bypass to Porur Junction is scheduled to open by December 2025.
