In Chennai, many accidents take place and this has caused huge concern for many. In order to reduce these accidents from taking place in the future, the Chennai city police have formed a special task force consisting of staff from IIT-Madras, Chennai Corporation and Highways Department etc. This was mentioned by Mr. Shankar Jiwal, Chennai police commissioner on Thursday, 8th September 2022. He then threw light on the identification of as many as 104 Black spots as accident prone places in Chennai.

Special police teams have been formed now to solve unsolved murders and murder for gain cases that have been reported since the year 2004. In 2021, in 5034 accidents as many as 998 persons died in Chennai city alone. It must be noted that Chennai ranked second in the deaths due to accidents but Chennai was first in the number of two wheelers accident deaths. The police commissioner spoke about how now 104 black spots have been identified where road accidents take place often. In identifying the black spots, the officials belonging to 6 departments played their part.

In the study that was conducted to identify these spots, Chennai Corporation officials, engineers from the Highways department, traffic personnel and IIT professors took part. The important piece of information is that up to 31st August 2022 the accidents have reduced by 20% and this was due to targeted enforcement. Truth is that in the same period in 2021 there were more road accidents.

Yesterday, an office for the Traffic Warden Association was inaugurated by Mr. Shankar Jiwal along with the additional commissioner of police, Traffic Mr. Kapil Kumar Saratkar in the campus of CoP office.

The police commissioner then made it very clear that the college students who create ruckus on the roads would be dealt with in a strict manner. He revealed that the city police have started remanding the college students under the Arms Act. It is noteworthy that earlier the college students who created ruckus on the roads were dealt with softly by getting them for counselling and by informing their parents etc. Shocking truth is that the college students kept on creating ruckus on the streets with weapons.
