With the poor response from the private operators, the marine highway project, which was started last year for transporting containers between Chennai and Ennore ports is still a non-starter. Despite, the Chennai port trust is extending the submission date for bidding the project, which was estimated as, Rs.5.60 crore.
However the tenders were floated in February 2013 for developing highway with the lease period of 10 years and the final submission date was fixed till March and again postponed until the first week of December 2014, with the hope to attract more interested parties. But there are still no bids for this project.
Chennai port, ranking 2nd largest container handling port in India, handles over 1.5 million containers every year. This project was expected to bring down congestions on roads due to trucks carrying containers. But prospective developers are worried about two main issues that threaten to block the roads for this project.
